Hybrid
Hybrid. My assignment for ISP 1b - we were given the theme 'hybrid'. This time I only had to create 1 main item and 1 supporting item. I didn’t have a fixed concept of the word from the start until I started on the project and pieced everything together slowly. In this project, I aim to cause a ripple of thoughts and set (back) in motion what used to be innate in us – thinking, and questioning. I’ve decided to string together a series of provocative statements that leaves a definite mark in the viewer’s mind, planting the seed of thought. Everybody will formulate a unique theory for themselves based on their beliefs and ideologies, so only the viewer himself can answer his question, and find his way out of the maze. I decided to present my statements in a series of posters, printed by hand. I personally like linocut and silkscreen a lot, and since I’ve tried both types before, I settled with printing traditionally. There is also more impact using this method, rather than sending the type to a printer. Together with the print, I drew on three different illustrations by hand, rendered in pen. The style of illustration I’ve chosen to reference to is in tandem with old school tattoos. My final presentation is a photograph of each poster held by a model, in different places, so my poster isn’t just an installation, but also a part of the society, the world. I’ve blocked out the model’s eyes with a black rectangle because I do not want the eyes to distract; similar with the washed out colour effect and selective saturation of the poster. Each illustration has a different meaning, as with the backgrounds I’ve put my poster (and model) against. My secondary item is a temporary tattoo, the designs from the illustrations on the poster. Because it remains on the skin for a while, it will serve as a reminder to the user to think. It may not be on a prominent area but with this, they will still be able to take a part of my poster with them physically. Whether they decide to use it or keep it, the tattoo will always carry the essence of the poster and the messages. Poster size: A3 Render method: Drawing pens Paper type: Some textured paper, about 85gsm Time taken: ~1 half day for carving, ~1 half hour for printing, 8-9 hours for drawing/rendering the tiger, 7-8 hours for drawing/rendering the skull&roses, 7-8 hours for drawing/rendering the Koi.
